The town of Santa Fe was very important to Tom at one point in his life. He and his first wife, Nancy, moved there in 1933 after living in Chicago for eight years. During their time there Tom became good friend with artist Fremont Ellis. Four different Tom Lea works are in the collection of the New Mexico Museum of Art: Leñador, 1934; Snake Dancers, 1933; Government Aid to the Needy, 1934; and, Employment in Public Works, 1934.
