beneath the canopy
this is a spot we are not meant to leave
horses blow softly and shift their weight
under creaking leather
minty bite of old leaves, loamy under boot soles
my legs are captured by
tree roots settled into shaded soil
and the topmost branches
sigh and whisper of the coming storm
white phosphorescent lobes position
rain-charged blue bellies
over nearby peaks
stay, let's stay and wait it out
